Wormhole Adds More Users to $W Airdrop: Your Eligibility May Have Changed. Here's How to Find Out

Wormhole's airdrop now includes more users thanks to refined eligibility criteria and anti-Sybil techniques. See if you qualify.

Wormhole has significantly updated the eligibility list for its $W token airdrop. After an initial announcement last week that left some users unsure of their status, Wormhole encourages everyone to revisit the airdrop checker, clear their browser cache with a hard refresh, and check their updated status. Here's what you need to know about how eligibility was determined.

Focus on Wormhole Users

The largest portion of the airdrop (approximately 81%) rewards those who have actively used Wormhole-based bridges and multichain applications. Wormhole analyzed three years of on-chain data, applying these factors to identify genuine users:

  • Cumulative Transfers: To qualify, users needed a minimum cumulative value transferred across all linked wallets. This threshold was adjusted based on other factors to favor early and consistent users.
  • Timing: Long-time Wormhole users and those active before December 2023 received bonus rewards. Activity during the 2022 bear market and during Wormhole's first year was also weighted favorably.
  • Assets & Chains: Transactions exceeding $10,000, those involving popular chains (like Ethereum), and ones with key DeFi assets (BTC, ETH, stablecoins) were given higher scores.

Sybil Detection Techniques

Wormhole employed anti-Sybil techniques to filter out likely bad actors to ensure a fair airdrop. These included:

  • Ownership Graphs Identified clusters of wallets belonging to the same user, maximizing each genuine user's potential reward.
  • Source of Funds Analysis: Wallets funded from a single source, primarily if known to be an exchange, were scrutinized for Sybil farming strategies.
  • Behavioral Analysis: Repetitive, automated transactions were flagged.
  • Spam Analysis: Abnormally high-frequency transactions may have been filtered out.

Community Participation

About 19% of the airdrop is for active Wormhole community members, including:

  • Wormhole Discord: Users with Spacewalker, Extraterrestrial, and Wormhole Fellow roles.
  • Zealy Participants: Top 500 contributors to Wormhole-related campaigns.
  • Pyth Stakers: Top 10,000 wallets by staked amount.
  • NFT Projects: DeGods/y00ts holders (joined Discord, verified holdings); Bad Kids (joined Discord, self-assigned role); Monad community members (active in Discord).
  • Mad Lads: Holders who joined Wormhole Discord and verified with Matrica.

After the airdrop, Wormhole will release a technical report offering detailed insights into the anti-Sybil techniques and clustering algorithms used. This aims to help Wormhole users understand the process and the broader crypto community to improve future airdrop protocols. If you believe you were wrongly excluded from eligibility, you can submit a request for reconsideration using the provided form.
