Phantom Wallet Hit by Major Downtime Following Grass Airdrop

The highly anticipated Grass Airdrop overwhelms Phantom Wallet’s backend, causing widespread disruption for users.

Phantom, the largest wallet on Solana, is facing significant backend downtime following the live launch of Grass Airdrop One, one of the most widely distributed airdrops in history. Grass, a Solana-based AI data layer, announced the airdrop in September, with 2 million active users set to receive tokens, making it a record-breaking distribution across all blockchains.

Shortly after the airdrop claim went live today, Phantom's backend systems became unresponsive as thousands of people tried to claim the airdrop at the same time. According to Phantom's official status page, the service has been down for around 60 minutes, and the team is investigating the issue. Their monitoring system reports the backend as unresponsive, affecting many users attempting to claim their airdrop.

With meme coin trading at an all-time high and decentralized exchange (DEX) activity surging on Solana, the Grass airdrop has turned into a stress test for Phantom's infrastructure. Despite the wallet's issues, Solana's network continues to function normally, handling the increased load without any interruptions.

This incident highlights the importance of infrastructure resilience as airdrops and token distribution grow in scale. While Phantom's team works on restoring service, the fact that Solana's network has remained stable is a positive sign for the ecosystem's ability to manage large-scale events.
